This book completely blew me away. From the moment I started reading, I couldn’t stop. Then upon reading that the author is a survivor of World War II herself, makes this book all the more raw and real.
Helen Burko does an amazing job crafting the characters of both Rachel and Jacob. The trial just about borke my heart. This is an astonishing, honest, view of war and its consequences, and of humanity. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Very slow moving start that seemed endless. Peculiar type relationship between protagonists seemed to be going nowhere except for repetitive brief action scenes. I read the reviews of others and decided not worth the one time.
This is a must read! It is a book that takes you to depths of thinking regarding the Holacaust , Nazis and forgiveness! Great 👍story makes you think and feel. Love is fleeting,as youth but there are insurmountable odds that people face in desperate circumstances.
I have to admit that at first I was on the fence about it but once it had my attention I could not put the book down I would have to defend my love as well and I'm really recommending this book to anyone who loves a great read
Two Strangers in a train station in Kiev. Both claim to be returning from German Concrentration camps after WW II. Two Jews who survived and fell in love. One American and one German trying to make their way to America.They marry, but all is not right. She doesn't like his family and friends and becomes depressed. Then things really fall apart.
Well written, but tends to drag in the middle. However, it does become a bit of a political rant at the end. ,
Not at all as described While the first part of the story was intriguing, when it got to the "gripping legal" scenes the story devolved into nothing more nor less than a treatise on moral equivalency -- one of the stupidest and most damaging philosophies ever to plague mankind. I wish I could sue the author for wasting my time.
The story line was promising. World War Two had ended and thousands of people were trying to reclaim what remained of their lives. When a Jewish man meets a beautiful woman the two join forces in an attempt to escape the remnants of tyranny, cruelty, and injustice. But then... the rich, handsome, American Jewish lawyer is deceived by this clever, breathtakingly beautiful, impish, remarkably resourceful, mysterious woman whom the reader had long identified as an imposter. If only the writer had not imbibed and embellished the story to the point that it was unbelievable and completely ridiculous at some points! Don't ask me why I read the entire book. I suppose that beneath the extensive wording, ridiculous circumstances, and unnecessary rabbit trails the writer leads you down, there lies the potential of a great story.
Jacob Barder (39, Jewish) awoke by the train track but it was long gone by then.
Later he boarded a cargo train.
He passed by Kiev, Ukraine.
The KGB were checking Jacob & Rachel baggage.
They both had jumped off the train & got separated rather than being deported back to Russia.
The Lvov-Warsaw train was at the next station.
The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee was taking care of Jacob (39) & Rachel Barder (wife, nee Kimmelman) & many/many others.
NYC. The Europa (ship) was approaching the harbor.
NYC. Jacob Barder (attorney, Holocaust survivor), waited while the guard brought Rachel (Jewish, Jacob’s wife, Warsaw CC survivor, Berlin U) to the prison meeting cell.
What dark secrets did Rachel confess to him.
The trial had begun for Mathilda Krause (26, aka Rachel).
Judge Carl Witner was presiding.
Claude Alrist (45) was the prosecutor, George Devoe was his asst., & Jacob represented his wife.
Will she spend the rest of her life in prison?

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. Wow, a very well written dual timeline (historical fiction WWII era) book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great WWII movie, or better yet a mini TV series. My favorite books to read. A very easy rating of 5 stars.
