In Eugenics and Other Evils Chesterton attacked eugenics as Britain was moving towards passage of the Mental Deficiency Act 1913. Some backing the ideas of eugenics called for the government to sterilise people deemed "mentally defective"; this view did not gain popularity but the idea of segregating them from the rest of society and thereby preventing them from reproducing did gain traction. These ideas disgusted Chesterton who wrote, "It is not only openly said, it is eagerly urged that the aim of the measure is to prevent any person whom these propagandists do not happen to think intelligent from having any wife or children." He blasted the proposed wording for such measures as being so vague as to apply to anyone, including "Every tramp who is sulk, every labourer who is shy, every rustic who is eccentric, can quite easily be brought under such conditions as were designed for homicidal maniacs. That is the situation; and that is the point … we are already under the Eugenist State; and nothing remains to us but rebellion."

I'm giving up on this book about half way through. I know many people love G. K. Chesterton, but I find some of his reasoning difficult to follow, even flawed. This may be the result differences in the use of language over the past century.

Physically the book appears to be printed on demand, when you order it. The paper and cover are good quality, but the typesetting has some gaps, the most serious gap is that the pages are not numbered, making proper reference to passages difficult.

I appreciate efforts to reprint old work, but these reprints should do more that just print the raw text. Copyrights, even expired ones, are useful. Original publication information, page numbers, indexes, etc are all useful and should be included. Sadly, this version does not have any of these features.

Eugenics and Other Evils With NotesBiography GF Chesterton Chesterton 9781520727721 Books Reviews

Brilliant read. A man that was so very ahead of his time.
a interesting take on the topic that has both sides together in a very insightful way
We are great fans of Chesterton so this was an excellent addition to our collection. As usual delivered in a flash.
After completing Michael Creighton's book, Next, I scanned his resources much to my surprise, he listed this book by Chesterton. I cannot enhance Creighton's comments in this review, but can state that G. K. Chesterton, a man with a remarkable gift of memory and humor and insight and wisdom, did us all a service (albeit 90 years ago) by penning this book. This one is not theological (as in The Everlasting Man), poetic (The Ballad of the White Horse), or in the form of a novel or short stories (all of which he wrote during his lifetime, such as the Father Brown mysteries, The Man Who Was Thursday, etc.). This book touches on life in the 21st Century in the United States of America from topics ranging from political correctness, to genetics and eugenics, to ecology and the environment, to evolution, and even to the topic of whether smoking should be banned.
I've often pondered whether the United States has ever produced its own Chesterton (perhaps Will Rogers; but he did not write at the same depth or level as Chesterton, though his observations were always laced with humor). Notwithstanding, we should not miss Chesterton's messages.
Would that our press corps and educators and political pundits learn from him.
This rambling review will benefit no one; the benefit will only come if those who bother to read comments as mine buy the book and savor its delights.
This is a very informative read. Eugenics is a very touchy subject but this book gives a good
all-around view of all the other aspects of Eugenics - namely where are the boundaries of
"Big Government and what "policies" should government be "allowed to dictate" and what
should they NOT be allowed to dictate.

Another GREAT read for this subject is "Fight For Your Health Inside the FDA's Betrayal of America" by
Byron J. Richards. This ia a great book that also outlines "Big Government", "Big Pharma",
the "Food Industry" and the "Diet Industry." This book ALSO tells about the United States
eugenics activities around the turn of the century - long before Adolf Hitler started in WWII.

A thoughtful read for anybody who likes a well-rounded point of view.
Almost terrifyingly applicable to current times, and well written.
I've been recommending it to friends and family.
I found it quite surprising, how many of the arguments are still relevant today. Eugenics may not be as openly advocated as it was in 1913, but some aspects of the philosophy are afoot today in other guise. Not to mention the general busybody interference of the state in private affairs for the citizen's own good. And Chesterton has an interesting take on social problems and both Capitalist and Socialist thoughts on them.
